How to request deletion
For account security, deletion requests must be verified. The fastest method is still the signed-in in-app flow:
- Open SobrCircle.
- Go to Settings.
- Select Delete Account.
- Complete the required confirmation and re-authentication steps.
What is deleted
- Account profile data
- User-generated content such as check-ins, comments, messages, and reactions
- Uploaded media files tied to the account, including profile photos, post and journal media under `users/{uid}/...`, and media stored for deleted chat threads
- Notification tokens and app account records
- Associated app metadata needed only for active account operation
What may be retained
Some limited records may be retained where required for:
- Legal compliance
- Security and fraud prevention
- Accounting or tax requirements
- Dispute resolution or legal claims
Current retention windows include:
- Security and abuse logs: up to 30 days after permanent deletion
- Encrypted backup copies: purged within 35 days of permanent deletion
- Billing, tax, and transaction records: up to 7 years where required
- Deletion-request audit records: up to 24 months
- CSAM reports filed under 18 U.S.C. § 2258A: retained as required by law (potentially indefinitely)
- Legal hold or dispute records: until resolved
Deletion timeline
When you tap Settings → Account → Delete Account in the app, your account enters a 30-day grace period before permanent deletion. The grace period is designed to protect you from accidental deletion and from someone else triggering deletion if they gain temporary access to your device.
What happens at each point in the timeline:
- Day 0 (the moment you confirm): Your authentication tokens are revoked immediately, signing you out on every device. Your profile, posts, messages, and journal entries are hidden from other users (your circle, group members, and anyone you previously messaged stop seeing your content). Your friend code stops resolving for new requests. Push notifications to your devices stop.
- Days 1–30 (grace period — restoration available): You can sign back in to SobrCircle at any time during this window to restore your account. Restoration unhides your data immediately and returns the account to its pre-deletion state. After restoration you can continue using SobrCircle normally; circle members and group members regain access to your historical content.
- Day 30 (permanent deletion runs): If you have not restored, an automated cascade runs and permanently deletes: your user document, your posts and comments and reactions, your journal entries, your milestones, your direct-message history (your side of any thread), your group memberships, your circle relationships, your live-location shares, your push-notification tokens, your friend code, your uploaded media in Storage, and finally your Firebase authentication record. The cascade typically completes within 60 seconds. Once your authentication record is deleted, the email and phone number tied to the account become free to use for a new SobrCircle signup.
- Days 31–60: Technical logs (security, abuse prevention, deletion-request audit records) may persist for up to 30 additional days beyond Day 30, then are permanently deleted. Encrypted backup copies are purged within 35 days of Day 30.
If something goes wrong during the Day 30 cascade (a transient backend failure), our monitoring fires an alert and our team intervenes manually to complete the deletion. The procedure is documented internally; in every case the goal is to complete permanent deletion as soon as the issue is identified and never to leave an account in a partially-deleted state.
